Why was trench warfare so successful in WWI?

Perhaps it was "successful" from a defensive point of view in that it achieved Stalemate and allowed Germany to hold it's line longer. It certainly was not successful from a British point of view, take the battle of the Somme for example. I always understood the Tank to have been the breaker of the dead lock which ultimately heralded the end of trench war fare.
